12x16 shed roof ridge beam. 1; 2; s. sserrels. contact options for registered users; posted on april 30, 2007, 2:16 am; i'm putting together plans for 12'x16' shed. i'm planning on using an end supported 16' long ridge beam to avoid using rafter ties. that's one hell of a beam for a shed. but the numbers make sense. i think i'd be better. I see a mix of ideas out there that are all presumably just as good as the next. one inconsistency i see is that some roofs have a ridge beam while others have the rafters standing alone. for a shed this small does it really matter? i plan on using tin on top of osb for the roof so i imagine it would be sturdy enough anyway.. Guy is only building a 10' wide shed .most of the photos are of sheds/garages quite a bit wider. if he uses a 8 ft 2x4 as a rafter with a 1 ft overhang (7 ft rafter) he will have the ridge about 4'10" higher than the shed wall.. 16" on center with a 2x4 tie every other rafter is going to make a very sturdy roof.
